Deep Breathing Exercises For Weight Loss

If you came to find deep breathing exercises for weight loss you came to the right place. If you aren’t familiar with the power of deep breathing you may think this is too good to be true and might be reluctant to try.

The truth is your breathing is one of the most important aspects to weight loss and to your overall health. The problem is there’s a lot of bad and harmful information out there on deep breathing.

In this article you are going to learn:

  • The science of weight loss and how breathing affects it
  • The dangers involved with breathing exercises
  • The proper way to take a deep breath and how to avoid danger

And a completely safe and easy deep breathing exercise that is part of a 15 minute workout routine called My System that develops all your muscles and improves the function of your:

  • Lungs
  • Skin
  • And all internal organs

Each one of these is key to perfect health and maintaining healthy weight.

The Science of Weight Loss and Breathing’s Role

Deep breathing oxygenates the blood and helps break down fat. Here’s how it all works:

It’s a scientific fact that fat is made up of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen; these are known as triglyceride molecules. In order to lose weight you must break these triglyceride molecules down through oxidation.

Oxidation is literally the burning of fat. This happens when your blood brings oxygen to fat and breaks the triglyceride molecules down into carbon dioxide and water as waste products.

85% of the waste is carbon dioxide and 15% is water. The carbon dioxide is brought to the lungs by your blood to be exhaled and exchanged for oxygen .

The water is lost through sweat, urine, feces, and other bodily fluids which are eliminated with the help of your skin, kidney, liver, and bowels.

This can be confusing if you aren’t familiar with human anatomy, but the main take away is your lungs are the most important organ for weight loss.

This is an indisputable fact.

85% of losing weight is done through the lungs, and this is why deep breathing is essential to weight loss. If practiced unwisely, breathing exercises can cause serious damage to your health though.

The Dangers of Deep Breathing

When done incorrectly, deep breathing can cause derangement to your nerves and can cause injury to your heart and lungs.

This happens if your breath with any amount of strain, improper form or too aggressively.

You can avoid strain in a few ways. The first way is to learn relaxation techniques but learning these can take a long time and can be very tedious.

The better way to ensure a strain-less breath is to breath after an exercise when more air is needed. This is the most comfortable and easiest way to safely expand your lungs to their full limit. This is how it’s done in My System.

I’ve been researching this topic for years and only a few times have I seen proper instruction given. Again, improper technique can lead to injury and again, My System teaches the right way to do it.

Proper Breathing Technique

Some people recommend breathing with your stomach only and although “belly breathing” has some value and is fine to breath this way when resting, it is a weak way to breath.

In a proper deep breath your whole chest expands and lifts and your ribs move outwards; your stomach isn’t involved in the process at all.

Proper breath

Many people make the mistake of sucking or breathing air forcibly through their nose. This causes a tremendous amount of strain and actually narrows the air passage in your nose, reducing the amount of air you breath in.

Your nose should only be a passive channel for air to pass through and your nostrils should be left wide open during the entire inhale.

In My System you perform two deep breaths after an exercise while standing with hands on hips. On the inhale your press your hands down on your hips, stretch your thorax upwards and move ribs outwards.

This causes a vacuum for air to rush in and fill the lungs on its own accord, without the need to sniff in with your nose.

Common mistakes of inhaling are;

  • Forcing air in through your nose
  • Arching chest instead of lifting upwards
  • Forcing shoulder back instead of lifting upwards
  • Throwing your head back too far instead of just slightly leaning the head back.
  • Using the abdomen; stomach should be completely relaxed

The Exhale Is More Important Than Your Inhale

Your exhale should last longer than your inhale and should be slower too. The walls of each of the four hundred millions of vesicles in the lungs are constructed of elastic fibers. The elasticity of these fibers will be lost over time if inflated too much or too often without giving them sufficient time to contract.

Your lungs will lose their ability to function properly if these fibers lose their elasticity.

Also remember that carbon dioxide is brought to the lungs by the blood and if you have a weak exhale, the carbon dioxide (which is a poison to humans) remains in the lungs. If these waste products aren’t properly expelled they get filtered back into the blood and this causes problems to your muscle tissues, organs, heart, nerves and brain.

Side angle of breath

If you wish to refresh and clean the lungs and body, you must have a prolonged exhale. Let’s look at how this is done.

All you have to do is relax all the respiratory muscles you used during the inhale. Your head and chin drop along with your entire chest. Also, your ribs should be drawn inwards as much as possible to squeeze out every bit of the stale air in your lungs.

Common mistakes in exhaling are:

  • Leaning the body too far forward instead of contracting the chest
  • Sucking the abdomen inwards
  • Breathing air out of the mouth

Many people recommend breathing out the mouth but this, for the most part, is wrong. Your nose filters unclean air and your body is made to breath through it, just like your body is made to have food go in the mouth.

It’s important to note only 1 out of 50 people breath correctly! This is one of the leading causes of obesity in developed countries.

More Deep Breathing Benefits

Deep breathing will make your sleep better, think more clearly, have better circulation, and make you feel better all over because of the increased supply of oxygen that will be provided to every organ in your body.

Problems like:

  • Insomnia
  • High blood pressure
  • Concentration problems
  • Lack of energy
  • Nervousness
  • Bad temper
  • Anxiety
  • Depression

Can all be fixed by improving your breathing and making deep breathing a daily habit. Your metabolism, immune system and mood all improve greatly with this simple exercise.

Breathing in the manner described above will also give your organs a gentle massage ensuring perfect digestion.

It’s important that the air you breath be fresh and pure too. Always do your breathing exercises in well ventilated room with an open window, or outside.

The Rest of My System

So far the focus has been the deep breathing portion of My System and the affects it has on weight loss and overall health. There are three more aspect of My System that are essential to your weight loss goals and overall well being:

These three aspects are:

  • Exercise
  • Daily shower
  • And self massage

The combination of these three and deep breathing develops all muscles on your body while improving the function of your lungs, skin and internal organs.

Also, it deeply relaxes you while clearing your mind and giving you plenty of energy for the entire day.

You will no longer need artificial stimulants, coffee or any other harmful pill to get through your day.

There’s a lot on this website about My System so I’ll keep the explanation of it short. If you wish for a more in depth look you can click here.

In all there are 19 exercises and once you become experienced, can perform the entire routine in 15 minutes. Also, there are no weights or special equipment involved.

The first 9 exercises are “muscular exercises” and include core strengthening and dynamic movements like push ups, sit ups, leg raises, squats and other moves for your mid section and shoulders.

You will learn the proper breathing of each exercise and because of this, each exercise doubles as a breathing exercise.

In between each exercise you perform the deep breathing which we already discussed.

After the first nine exercise with deep breathing in between you take your daily shower which is essential for your health and skin. It is recommended to take the shower temped or cool because of the health affects cold water has.

You will learn to do so in complete comfort and complete safety, and you will find the refreshing and invigorating feeling of cool water more pleasant than hot water. You can, however, still take the showers warm if you don’t feel like making the change.

After you dry off you begin the self massage, which make up the last 10 exercises. It’s a simple rubbing of the palms of your hands to your skin in specific directions depending on the movement.

This rub is combined with exercise so you get a muscular workout too. You’ll also learn the proper breathing of each massage, so each exercise doubles as a breathing exercise.

This rub makes your skin:

  • Firm yet soft as velvet
  • Wrinkle proof, as well as reverse wrinkles
  • Prevents acne, pimples and blemishes

This massage tones up all your internal organs like kidneys, liver and digestive system, and improves their vitality; they literally grow in size.

Every part of your body gets a rub and this hard self massage loosens and bring circulation to fatty tissues (remember blood brings oxygen to break up fat and removes the waste product from this) .

The combination of massage to improve blood flow and loosen fatty tissues with exercise and breathing is the most effective, efficient and pleasant way to lose weight possible.

This routine truly makes you healthy inside and out.

Conclusion

There’s no need to risk your health with unsafe diet pills, or exhaust yourself with straining exercise. You can lose weight easily in a relaxing and energizing way which leaves you with a clear mind, a happy mood and good feeling body for the entire day.

My System will give you exactly that. There is even a six week video course being offered here at perfect health at home based on My System that will bring any person or at any fitness level from beginner to expert.

Hey, Dylan! Very cool tips on breathing. I used to take singing lessons coming from the Vaccaj school, and very deep focus was placed on singing. Besides the obvious singing benefits, I saw that it also benefited my overall quality of life, bringing calmness, focus and better athletic performance. I hope you can spread the benefits of better breathing to a lot of people!

Hi Dylan, I love this post! Its a great informative piece set out very clearly and its easy to follow! Reading it I was going to suggest adding an informative video then when i got to the bottom I noticed the section about the video course! Maybe a little 30 sec – 1 minute clip of a “preview” that demonstrates a simple exercise could also be useful for splitting the text up a little? keep up the great work!

I’ve heard of deep breathing techniques being used for weight loss, but I never knew how it worked and all the science behind it until now. This was an extremely informative and useful article I’ll certainly need to bookmark. You were very thorough and even stated the dangers of it, which is greatly appreciated.

    Dear Dylan,

I found your page intriguing, especially the part about not needing diet pills to get through the day. I agree that diet pills are dangerous (and the FDA has ruled them out as mostly ineffective). Too many people are hopped up on caffeine and not seeing any results. It’s sad.

You mentioned the process of fat getting used up in the body and then excreted through breathing. Does that mean people can lose weight by breathing exercises alone, or is this a way the body gets rid of waste from fat that was burned through other activities?

Also, I’m just curious- do you have a medical degree, and is your system doctor approved? Best regards!

      Hey thanks for commenting

You can do breathing exercises alone but there are some dangers if you do them alone. When you exercise your body removes waste better though from increased breathing and sweating.

Also, I don’t have a medical degree and these methods are doctor approved and safe. Everything is well researched

Hi Dylan, you have a nice website and informative. I really didn’t know that deep breathing helps in weight loss. I know that during workout breathing helps oxygenate and energize the muscles. I surely learned something new today. And the program sounds cool.
Thank you and have a nice week full of accomplishments.

    Cheers, Roberta.

I’ve heard of deep breathing in yoga and in many exercises, but I was not aware it could help in losing weight. Most of losing weight is done through the lungs? I must have missed this somewhere along the years of trying to lose weight. I’d like to try this technique but I’m glad you pointed out that there’s danger if you do it wrong.
