picture of valerina plantIf you are looking to purchase valerian in bulk I would like to recommend my two favorite suppliers of herbs, Starwest Botcanicals and Buddha Teas.

Starwest is for anyone looking to buy large amounts of the actual root or extract. Buddha Teas is for anyone looking for valerian tea bags. Both companies offer different quantities to suit your exact needs.

Before you see the products and why Starwest and Buddha Teas are my favorite places to buy valerian, you should know exactly what you are getting from this incredible herb.

Health Benefits Of Valerian

Valerian is best known for its ability to calm nerves and induce sleep but there is so much more this herb can do for you. Besides being a great cure for insomnia, it can:

  • Lower blood pressure
  • Ease anxiety and depression
  • Help with cardiac arrhythmia
  • Hives
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Premenstrual syndrome
  • Indigestion
  • Low fevers and colds
  • Muscle Relaxer

Plus you get a sound, deep sleep without the hangover sleeping pills and NyQuil give you.

As you can see, valerian is worth having around. Let’s get into the products now and I’ll start off with Starwest’s selection.

Organic Valerian Root C/S: $24.58 per pound, $9.25 for 4 ounces

valerian rootThis is a really high quality version of valerian root. It’s USDA Certified Organic, meaning it was grown in the most ideal environment possible; it was nurtured for its entire growing process and wasn’t born on polluted lands. Also, no chemicals were used in the fertilization process.

This is perfect for any person that likes making their own herbal teas. It’s pretty easy to do and you just have to add between 1 to 3 teaspoons per cup of water. Never boil this root, instead cover and steep between 10 to 15 minutes.

Since this isn’t the best smelling herb, you may want to add some honey or lemon.

Valerian Root C/S Wildcrafted: $22.58 per pound

Wildcrafed means the root was harvested in its natural environment, the wild. There was no human intervention during the entire growing process.

This is slightly cheaper because there’s no cost in maintaining the plant. This is still a very quality version and you use the same guidelines I just mentioned in making the tea.

Organic Valerian Root Powder: $27.00 per pound, $9.83 for 4 ounces

Purchasing the powder gives you a few more options when it comes to taking this root. You can still make a tea with it and it will take a little less time to steep.

You can also add 1/2 teaspoon of the powder to 1/4 cup of water and drink it that way. You can even mix it with foods like mashed potatoes. mashed vegetables and ground up sweet fruits. This is usually for children or very sensitive people.

This is USDA Certified Organic too.

Organic Valerian Root Extract: $32.50 for 4 ounces, $12.15 for 1 ounce

valerian extractThis is my favorite way to take herbs, including valerian. It’s so simple and there’s limited preparation. All you have to do is add 10 to 20 drops in some water and you’re good to go.

There’s no cleaning pots and pans or waiting 20 minutes for your root to simmer. Some people really enjoy the process of making teas but I personally just like the convenience of an extract.

Just like many of the products at Starwest, this is USDA Certified Organic.

Organic Tea Bags From Buddha Teas: 5 boxes for $35.95, 3 boxes for $22.92, 1 box for $8.99

This option is for people that like to enjoy there teas with a tea bag. This is a very easy way to make tea and all you do is:

  • valerian root teaPlace 1 tea bag in boiling water
  • Cover and steep for 3 to 6 minutes
  • Take tea bag out and enjoy

Plus there are several different amounts to suit your needs. The more boxes you buy, the more you save. If you purchase 5 boxes, you save 35% and 3 boxes save you 30%.

These products are all USDA Certified Organic and you get free shipping on orders over $50.

Safety Concerns

Valerian is considered generally safe and is listed as such by the FDA. When you compare it to addicting and harmful pharmaceuticals, it’s really a no brainer which is better. Still, there are possible side effects, which can include:

  • Headache
  • Restlessness
  • Blurred vision

A woman once took 40 valerian capsules in an attempt at suicide and she experienced fatigue, headache and abdominal cramps. All symptoms cleared up in 24 hours without medical assistance. If she took 40 Advil PM’s she most certainty would have been successful in her attempt.

Some herbalists feel you should give yourself a break after a few weeks of continual use. If you experience any side effects, stop using.

You should see a doctor before taking medicinal amounts of anything.

Did You Find What You Were Looking For?

I hope so! I love these two companies because they are so well respected and always deliver. Their products are really high quality and their prices are extremely fair.

Valerian is a herb every person should have in their medicine cabinets. It helps with so many issues and does so in a safe way. If you would like to check out Starwest Botanical’s selection of valerian, click below:

The tea bags and extract are good for a while. The root will last a while if you keep it in a jar. It’s like any medicine.
